Facelift in Charleston, SC

Gravity, sun exposure, and changes in your skin, muscles, and other tissue cause the skin of your face to loosen and begin to sag. If you believe that your face makes you look older than you desire, a facelift can help restore your appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse offers facelifts for men and women who live in Charleston, Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and the surrounding communities in South Carolina.

What Is A Facelift?

A facelift is used to correct many visible signs of aging, including:

  • Midface sagging
  • Creases below the lower eyelids or nose
  • Displaced fat that can create both facial hollowness and deep creases
  • Muscle laxity in the skin
  • Excess fat in the skin

Facelifts are customized procedures that are designed to address the specific aging of your face. During your consultation, Dr. Widenhouse will talk about what is appropriate for you.

Sometimes other procedures are recommended in combination with a facelift to achieve the best possible results. Common ones include eyelid surgery, forehead lift, and laser skin resurfacing. These procedures work together with a facelift to provide overall rejuvenation for your face, and sometimes they are a better alternative for your symptoms of facial aging.

How Much Does A Facelift Cost in Charleston?

The cost of a facelift depends on many elements specific to each patient’s unique procedure. The cost of your facelift will be disclosed during your consultation. We accept payment via cash, check, and credit card. For your convenience, financing is also available.

What To Expect After A Facelift?

Recovery from a facelift varies because the procedure is highly customized to your personal needs. After your facelift, you will need to have someone drive you home, and it is often recommended that you have someone around to help you during the immediate recovery period. Your face will be swollen and may be bruised. Discomfort can be controlled with prescription medication. You may require a week or two before you are able to return to work.

Will I Have Scars After Getting A Facelift?

Because it’s the face which is treated by a facelift, it is extremely important that scars be kept as unnoticeable as possible. Dr. Widenhouse places the incisions above the hairline to perform the facelift, so incisions are hidden below the hair.

When Will I See The Results?

A facelift does produce swelling. As swelling reduces, you’ll be able to view your facelift’s results more and more. It can take up to six months for swelling to fully subside, allowing you to fully view the results.

What Are Possible Complications Of A Facelift?

Possible complications associated with the facelift procedure include:

  • Bleeding and bruising
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Neurological dysfunction
  • Hair loss
  • Asymmetry

How Long Will The Results Of A Facelift Last?

Although recovery from a facelift is longer than for many other facial plastic surgery procedures, most patients believe the results justify the wait. No other procedure is able to make such dramatic and such long lasting results to help you maintain your youthful appearance.

Benefits of A Facelift

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For A Facelift?

If you suffer from these unwanted facial aesthetics, a facelift may be appropriate for you:

  • Sagging around the jawline or mid-facial area
  • Deep and far-reaching creases from the nose to edges of the mouth
  • Lines extending from the corners of the mouth to the chin displacing facial fat
  • Loose skin under the chin and jaw
  • Creased, sagging skin on the neck

Candidates should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for the results, which can be produced through a facelift.

What Do I Need To Do Before A Facelift?

Prior to your facelift, you’ll meet with Dr. Widenhouse for a consultation, where he will examine your facial features and review your medical history. This is done to determine if a facelift is the right treatment to address your concerns and if there are any medical issues which could complicate the surgery or healing process. The doctor will develop a treatment plan, identifying facial features to be targeted by your facelift to provide the results you desire.

Instructions will be provided to help you prepare for your facelift. To facilitate proper healing, patients should quit smoking and/or quit other nicotine products four weeks before surgery. Certain medications and health supplements may need to be stopped prior to surgery.

On the day of the procedure, you will need to bring someone with you who can drive you home following your treatment.

What Should I Expect On The Day Of My Facelift?

Facelifts are performed under IV sedation. An incision is made near your ear. The length and exact placement of the incision depends on how much lifting you desire and the specific places to be lifted. The incisions are well hidden either above your hairline or in the curve of the ear. The skin and underlying supporting tissue are lifted up and shaped. They are not just tightened, but shaped to give a natural, youthful appearance. This may include repositioning of fat and superficial muscles. Excess skin, fat, and other tissue may be removed. Once the reshaping is complete, your incisions are closed.

How Long Does It Take To Perform A Facelift?

The length of a facelift procedure depends on how extensive it will be. A full facelift combined with a neck lift can take up to eight hours.

Facelift FAQs

How do I tighten my jawline?

A lower facelift is a good option for tightening the jawline. Laser treatments may also work to tighten the jawline. However, depending on the level of sagging jowls, a lower facelift may be the best solution.

How do I get rid of my double chins?

Usually, a double chin can be diminished with liposuction. It is a fairly routine procedure with little discomfort and downtime. Liposuction of eh chin goes along way to sculpt and redefine the face.

How do you reduce swelling after a facelift?

Swelling will occur following a facelift. We suggest sleeping with your head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure. Swelling can also be decreased by applying ice packs or cold packs to the face. However, ice should not be directly applied to the skin, as that may cause damage.
