Charleston Otoplasty

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, or sometimes ear pinning, is a plastic surgery most often performed on children and younger teens to correct protruding ears that can sometimes lead to teasing or bullying. It can help children build their self-esteem and experience better social relationships. Sometimes adults who do not like the shape of their ears, whether it is the natural shape or the result of a prior ear surgery, also request otoplasty.

If you are considering ear pinning for yourself or your child, you can discuss the procedure in a personal consultation with Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse today. Please call or email Port City Plastic Surgery in Charleston, South Carolina today.

Deciding on Otoplasty

Ear surgery is used to correct protruding ears or ears whose shape makes a person feel self-conscious. It can correct conditions present at birth, that develop naturally, or that are the result of injury or previous ear surgery. A good candidate for otoplasty generally must:

  • Be in good health without ongoing illness or infection, especially an ear infection
  • Have mature ears, which generally occurs at about age 5
  • Be cooperative and able to follow verbal instruction

Older patients are considered a good candidate for ear surgery if:

  • They are in good general health
  • They are non-smokers
  • They have realistic goals for the procedure

Be sure to share all the candidate's previous and current medical conditions, medications, and/or supplements. Even if you do not think it is relevant, it is best to share it with Dr. Widenhouse.

The Otoplasty Procedure

During ear pinning, an incision is made in the back of the ear. Cartilage in the ear is removed or reshaped to create the desired effect. Although otoplasty is still often called ear pinning, modern reshaping techniques are highly advanced and give a more natural result than previous techniques. The procedure takes about 2-3 hours.

Otoplasty Recovery and Results

After an ear pinning procedure, dressings are used to help the ear heal into its new shape. These may be worn for up to five days. When they are removed, the results may be immediately visible, though swelling may still be present. Scars are generally well-hidden behind or in the folds of the ear.

Otoplasty Risks

Like all surgery, ear pinning has risks. Please see our page on surgical complications to learn more.
