Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a “nose job”) is a surgical procedure to improve the size and shape of your nose. If you desire a nose that looks better and complements your facial features, rhinoplasty may be for you. Rhinoplasty can help people who dislike the shape of their nose due to either natural development or injury.

What Rhinoplasty Corrects
Rhinoplasty can help reshape the nose to correct many commonly-felt problems with appearance, including:
- Noses that are too large in comparison to other facial features
- Bridges that have humps, bumps, or depressions
- Bridges that are too wide or are crooked
- Tips that are large, bulbous, or hanging
- Nostrils that are large or upturned
Many of these can be corrected simultaneously. In looking at your nose, plastic surgeon Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse will evaluate its shape and give you an idea about what results you might be able to expect.
Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is generally sought by people who have long been uncomfortable with the shape or size of their noses. It is important to begin with a good understanding of what the procedure can accomplish and realistic expectations for your rhinoplasty procedure. Please see Is Nose Surgery Right for Me? for more details.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is performed with IV sedation. Dr. Widenhouse performs open rhinoplasty procedures in nearly every case. This procedure begins with an incision in the columella, the tissue that separates your nostrils. Doing this allows Dr. Widenhouse to better view and manipulate the interior structure of the nose.
Depending on your aesthetic goals, nasal structures can be reduced, reshaped, or augmented. This may require the use of donor cartilage, which may be taken from the nose or elsewhere in the body.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results
At Port City Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. After your rhinoplasty, you will need someone to drive you home, and it is recommended that you have someone stay with you the night of your procedure. You will have a brace, nose packing, or tubes in your nostrils to help your nose heal in the desired shape. You should be able to return to work in less than two weeks after your surgery.
Swelling of the nose will diminish gradually over several months. It may take up to a year before you see the final results of your rhinoplasty. But once healed, the results are permanent.
