Questions about Breast Lift Surgery

Plastic Surgery in Charleston, SC

South Carolina Breastlift

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (also called a mastopexy) is a surgical procedure for reshaping sagging breasts to give them a perkier, more youthful contour. Your breast tissue is reshaped, giving your breasts a more youthful appearance. Sagging tissue and nipples will be moved up. If necessary, slack skin will be tightened and excess removed. Your breasts will look and feel firmer. Depending on the amount of lift your breasts require, your incision may be above the areola, completely encircling the areola, or around the areola and descending to the breast crease.

Do I need a Breast Lift?

A breast lift can help women with significant sagging (ptosis) of the breasts. If you are happy with the amount of breast tissue and volume you already have but feel that your breasts are sagging or simply have never had the appearance that you desire, a breast lift may be an appropriate surgery to achieve the appearance you want In certain cases, a breast lift can be accomplished with an implant alone.

See our main breast lift page for more details.

Can the size of my areola be reduced during a Breast Lift?

Yes. When the nipple is being repositioned the size of the areola can be reduced.

Will my Breast Lift be performed under local anesthesia or with IV sedation?

The anesthesia used for your breast lift procedure is IV sedation.

What is recovery from a Breast Lift like?

After your surgery you will wear a special surgical bra over your gauze dressings. There are no drains and you will not have sutures to be removed. Your breasts will be bruised, swollen, and sore for several days following surgery, but discomfort is easily managed with medication.

When will I see final results from my Breast Lift?

Similar to breast augmentation, your breasts may at first seem a little high. As swelling decreases, they will move into a more natural position. Your breasts will continue settling into their new position for several months or up to a year. Many women experience a temporary lack of sensation in their nipples. This may last from a few weeks up to a year. There is a slight possibility that your sensation will never return to completely normal.
