Questions about Reconstructive Breast Surgery
Plastic Surgery in Charleston, SC
What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure for restoring one or both breasts that have been removed due to breast cancer or other illness.
Do I have to have Breast Reconstruction immediately after my Mastectomy (breast removal operation)?
No. Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or it can be performed at a later date. Some women do not like the thought of ever being without breasts. Others feel they need a period of emotional adjustment. Other women decide initially to forego breast reconstruction, but later decide they want it. The timing of your breast reconstruction is up to you and your treating doctors.
Is it better to have breast conserving surgery or to have the breast removed and reconstructed?
Breast conserving surgery for breast cancer should be discussed with your oncologist to determine which procedure is more appropriate to your situation. However, modern reconstructive breast surgery techniques can give you an appearance as good as or better than breast conserving surgery in most cases.
What are my options for Breast Reconstruction?
There are two common forms of reconstructive breast surgery: reconstruction using breast implants and reconstruction using a tissue flap. A detailed description of these options can be found on our Breast Reconstruction page.
What are the benefits of Breast Reconstruction using Breast Implants?
Reconstructive breast surgery using breast implants has a shorter recovery time than flap reconstruction. It also does not leave additional scars from the creation of a tissue flap. It is also an option for women who do not have a suitable donor region for a tissue flap.
What are the benefits of Breast Reconstruction using a tissue flap?
Reconstructive breast surgery using a tissue flap generally gives more natural-looking results than reconstruction using breast implants. There is no breast implant that may need to be replaced in a future surgery. The creation of the tissue flap can also leave a woman with a more attractive abdominal contour. Flap reconstructive surgery also does not require a second procedure.
Will insurance cover the cost of my Breast Implants used for reconstructive surgery?
Yes. Most insurance plans cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery, whether performed using breast implants or a tissue flap. Our insurance coordinator will work with you and your insurance company to ensure that the cost of the procedure is covered by your insurance company.
