Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or augmentation mammoplasty, is a procedure that uses breast implants to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It is the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Breast augmentation is performed in our accredited surgical center. We have an anesthesiologist on staff that allows us to perform breast augmentation using IV sedation.

During breast augmentation surgery, breast implants are placed either beneath the breast tissue or beneath pectoral muscles. Dr. Widenhouse utilizes techniques which keeps scar visibility at a minimum, so as not to mar the appearance of the breasts.

How Long Does It Take To Perform Breast Augmentation?

At Port City Plastic Surgery, a breast augmentation procedure typically lasts one to two hours. After the procedure, you will recover briefly at our facility before being released to go home. You must bring along someone else to drive you home due to the use of IV sedation.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Will I lose sensation in my nipples after breast augmentation?
A complete loss in nipple sensation following a breast augmentation is very rare. In most cases, patients experience temporary changes in sensitivity that return to normal within a few months of surgery. These changes can include reduced sensitivity, increased sensitivity or a loss in sensitivity.
Where will the incisions for breast augmentation be placed?
The location of the incisions for your breast augmentation will depend on the implants you are receiving and your treatment goals. Possible incision locations include the armpit, the creases beneath the breasts and the perimeter of the areolas. In any case, the incisions are placed carefully to ensure that any scarring is well-hidden.
What can I expect after breast augmentation surgery?
The breast augmentation recovery can take between one and two months. In the days immediately following surgery, you may experience significant discomfort, swelling and soreness in the breasts. During this time, it is encouraged that patients take pain medication and rest as much as possible. About one week later, patients can begin returning to work and other normal activities. However, exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a month after surgery.
Will a breast augmentation fix sagging breasts?
Breast augmentation is not an effective solution for sagging breasts. In fact, in some cases, breast implants can worsen sagging by adding more weight to the breasts. The most effective solution for sagging breasts is a breast lift, which lifts the breasts without using implants and increasing breast size. If you are interested in both lifting the breasts and enhancing their size, you may want to combine your breast augmentation with a breast lift.
When can I return to work and exercise after breast augmentation?
Patients can expect to return to work approximately one week after their breast augmentation surgery, although some patients may choose to wait longer depending on the demands of their job. Exercise and other strenuous activities will need to be avoided for at least one month after treatment in order to allow the muscles in and around the chest to heal completely. However, light walking is encouraged in the meantime to facilitate blood flow and accelerate healing.
What’s the difference between breast augmentation and implants?
The difference between breast augmentation and implants is that breast augmentation is a general surgical procedure performed to enhance the shape and size of the breast. It can be done using various techniques, one of which is breast implants. Breast implants are the artificial devices inserted into the breasts to enhance the size while maintaining the look and feel of natural breast tissue.
Can I keep my breast implants forever?
Breast implants are not intended to last for a lifetime, but they do last for many years. Most implants are FDA approved for 10-20 years. After this time period, or if you notice any changes in the quality of your implants, it will become necessary to remove and replace your breast implants.
Can you breastfeed with breast implants?
It is certainly possible to breastfeed with breast implants, but it’s not guaranteed. Each person is unique, and the ability to breastfeed will depend on the size and location of the implants, as well as the surgical techniques used to place them in the breasts. While breastfeeding with breast implants is safe and often possible, you should discuss the possible effects of breast implants on breastfeeding with your doctor prior to surgery.
Should I get breast implants before pregnancy?
It is generally recommended not to get breast implants before pregnancy. During pregnancy, the breast tissue often enlarges, which can make the results of breast implants unpredictable. Furthermore, depending on the techniques involved, breast implants can impact your ability to breastfeed. Most patients choose to wait until after pregnancy to receive a breast augmentation, at which time many patients also benefit from a breast lift and related procedures.
Do you wear a bra after breast augmentation?
Immediately after breast augmentation, you should plan to wear a compression bra. These stabilize and cushion the breasts so that they can heal properly. You should also consider wearing a bra once healed, as larger breasts are more vulnerable to the effects of gravity, which will cause drooping and sagging. However, you will be free to choose the type of bra you wear, and how often, once the breasts are fully healed (6-8 weeks).
