Spider Vein Treatment in Charleston, SC

Over 80 million Americans are affected by unsightly spider veins. Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Port City Plastic Surgery, performs spider vein treatment on people living in and around Charleston, Daniel Island, Summerville and Mount Pleasant, SC, who suffer from spider veins and are very self-conscious about their appearance.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are thin, dark red or purple lines that appear most commonly on the legs although they may appear in other areas of the body. They are caused by an issue in the veins where the blood tries to flow backwards which causes the veins to rise to the surface and swell. They can make you feel uncomfortable about the appearance of your legs and cause you to avoid wearing shorts or swimsuits.

How Much Do Spider Vein Treatment Cost in Charleston?

The cost of spider vein treatment varies with each patient depending on the treatment performed, the size of the area with spider veins and how many treatments are necessary to achieve the desired appearance. During a consultation with Dr. Widenhouse, we will go over the costs with you as well as payment options including financing.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

In the past, there was no way to correct spider veins; however, today, there are different methods for eliminating spider veins. At Port City Plastic Surgery, we offer two spider vein treatments: sclerotherapy and laser spider vein removal.

  • Sclerotherapy. With sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the veins so that the vein collapses. When this happens, the blood flow is cut off and rerouted through other veins.
  • Laser spider vein removal. Another way to treat spider veins is to use laser treatments with VersaPulse®. Using this technique is safe and effective as the light energy is absorbed by the vein without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.

Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment

Not only do spider vein treatments significantly diminish and erase the appearance of spider veins, they offer the following benefits:

  • Minimally or non-invasive treatments
  • Quick treatment time
  • No downtime or recovery

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Spider Vein Treatment?

Men and women with purple or dark red visible veins at the surface of the skin may be ideal candidates for spider vein treatment. To determine if and which treatment is the best option to remove these veins, a consultation is necessary so that Dr. Widenhouse can evaluate the veins as well as the surrounding skin tissue.

How Do I Prepare for Spider Vein Treatment?

Preparing for spider vein treatment is minimal. We recommend that patients not apply lotion or oil 24 hours prior to the treatments and shave the night before. Additionally, if planning well ahead, avoid direct sun on the areas of the body where the treatment is to take place to prevent any dark pigmentation at the injection site. We also recommend patients wear shorts or very loose pants to the treatments.

What Should I Expect on the Day of Spider Vein Treatment?

The process of spider vein treatments varies depending on which treatment is being done. With sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the unwanted vein that causes the vein to close shutting off the flow of blood. When this happens, the vein appears lighter while the solution irritates the lining. The result is that the vein collapses. The area is wrapped with bandages that act as a compression, so the vein stays closed, and no blood can flow through it. Sclerotherapy is not painful, but there may be a slight burning sensation that lasts for a few seconds when the solution is injected.

As for laser treatments for spider vein removal, a hand-held device targets spider veins sending light energy directly to them. When this happens, the veins close and eventually collapse so that no blood can flow through them.

How Long Does It Take to Perform Spider Vein Treatment?

Spider vein treatments are quick in-office procedures that are typically completed within 30 minutes to an hour. It may take several sessions to achieve the desired look depending on the extent of the spider veins.

What to Expect After Spider Vein Treatment?

Following spider vein treatment, it is possible to return to your normal, daily routine. We highly recommend that patients start walking immediately to ensure proper blood flow. This speeds up the healing process as well.

When Will I See the Results?

Immediately following spider vein treatments, there is some noticeable lightening of the veins. Within a month, the vein is absorbed by the body and disappears.

How Long Will the Results from Spider Vein Treatment Last?

The results from spider vein treatments are long lasting. Once the vein is closed off, it does not re-open; however, it is possible for new spider veins to appear.
