Labiaplasty in Charleston, SC

Irregularities of the female genitalia can cause physical pain and discomfort, while also causing a woman to feel self-conscious or uncomfortable with her body. Cosmetic labiaplasty can correct the shape of the labia, perfecting balance and removing irregularities causing physical and emotional pain. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse offers labiaplasty for women who live in Charleston, Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and the surrounding communities in South Carolina.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery which reshapes the labia, reducing excess skin and correcting asymmetry. While often considered a cosmetic procedure, labiaplasty also addresses functional issues causing irritation or pain. There is no loss of sensation after undergoing labiaplasty. Labiaplasty may also be performed to reduce tissue surrounding the clitoris, known as the clitoral hood. By reducing the clitoral hood, the clitoris is still protected while facilitating sexual stimulation.

Labiaplasty addresses concerns such as:

  • Enlarged labia minora
  • Enlarged labia majora
  • Asymmetry

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost in Charleston?

The cost of labiaplasty will be disclosed during your consultation with Dr. Widenhouse. For your convenience, you may pay for your procedure using cash, check, or major credit card. Financing is also available to make the procedure more affordable.

What To Expect After Labiaplasty?

Following your labiaplasty procedure, you may feel numb in the genital region. This is typical and will last about one day. You will have stitches, so take great care not to disrupt them with your clothing or by touching the labia.

Patients should expect to take a minimum of two days off work following labiaplasty. You’ll need to refrain from strenuous activities until cleared by Dr. Widenhouse, which may take several weeks.

Will I Have Scars After Getting Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty does involve incisions, so scarring will occur. Scars are typically positioned within the lips of the labia minora and/or majora as well as the clitoral hood. Due to their position, these scars are typically not noticed.

When Will I See The Results?

Results of labiaplasty are noticeable after surgery. If you experience swelling, once it resolves you’ll be able to clearly see the new contour of your labia.

What Are Possible Complications Of Labiaplasty?

Possible complications associated with labiaplasty include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Reduced genital sensitivity

How Long Will The Results Of Labiaplasty Last?

Labiaplasty offers long-lasting results. The appearance and function of the labia could be altered in the future due to pregnancy, childbirth, or trauma. If this occurs, the patient may wish to undergo a revision, which is a secondary procedure to correct these new issues.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty produces physical and emotional benefits for women, including:

  • Eliminates discomfort and pain
  • Ends chronic yeast infections caused by elongated labia
  • Enhances intimate experiences
  • Creates symmetry
  • Restores confidence in one’s appearance

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For Labiaplasty?

Women who have an elongated labia which causes chronic tenderness, irritation and discomfort are good candidates for labiaplasty. An elongated labia minora can lead to infection, as well as discomfort during athletic and normal activities, which can be decreased with labiaplasty. Women who have suffered damage or changes to the labia due to childbirth, pregnancy, or other trauma are also good candidates. Labiaplasty can be performed prior to childbirth as the procedure does not interfere, but those who are considering becoming pregnant in the future may elect to wait until after having children, as pregnancy and childbirth can alter the appearance of the female genitalia.

What Do I Need To Do Before Labiaplasty?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Widenhouse to discuss if labiaplasty is appropriate to treat your concerns. Through a physical examination of the genitalia and a review of your medical history, he will determine if labiaplasty will achieve your aesthetic and functional goals. A treatment plan will be created encompassing the elements you wish to address through labiaplasty and the techniques needed to produce optimal results. Feel free to openly discuss your goals and concerns during this consultation.

Certain instructions must be followed prior to surgery to ensure the success of your procedure. Please quit smoking and/or using nicotine replacement products four weeks before surgery. Some medications and supplements may need to be removed from your daily regimen until after surgery, as they could affect the surgical process.

What Should I Expect On The Day Of My Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is performed under IV sedation.

During labiaplasty, Dr. Widenhouse will perform reductions to specific areas of the genitalia to improve function and form. Labia minora reduction is an increasingly popular surgical procedure, which reduces the skin of the inner labia. The result is inner labia which is smaller than the labia majora, creating an aesthetic result many women desire.

Labia majora reduction removes skin and reshapes the outer labia lips. This reduction improves the contour of the genital area, which can sometimes be visible when tight-fitting clothing is worn.

A clitoral hood reduction removes excessive soft tissue surrounding the clitoris which can limit a woman’s sexual pleasure. The clitoris will still be protected, which is the purpose of the clitoral hood, and sexual stimulation heightened.

Depending on your concerns, one, two, or all types of labiaplasty may be performed to produce optimal results.

How Long Does It Take To Perform Labiaplasty?

It can take approximately one hour to complete the labiaplasty procedure. This time may vary depending on what techniques are used to complete the procedure.

Why would you get a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty reduces the length of the labia minora and/or labia majora. It is a cosmetic procedure that can alleviate painful symtoms that woman may experience with twisting of the labia. Some women get a labiaplasty to restore the appearanace of the labia following childbirth or aging.
