Fat Transfer and Injections in Charleston, SC

If you are apprehensive about using prescription dermal fillers but want to add volume to your face, you may want to consider fat transfer and injection to add volume and smooth your complexion. At Port City Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse, a board-certified plastic surgeon, treats people living in Charleston, Daniel Island, Summerville and Mount Pleasant, SC, as well as the surrounding communities, who want to add volume with fat transfer and injection to diminish the signs of aging.

What is Fat Transfer and Injection?

As a minimally invasive procedure, fat transfer and injection takes fat from one area of the body and injected into areas of the face that are typically more prone to show the signs of aging. With fat transfer, the injected fat must be sculpted to look natural and younger.

How Much Does Fat Transfer and Injection Cost in Charleston?

The cost of fat transfer and injection varies with each patient based on the area from which fat is harvested, the extent of the area to be treated and if there are other areas involved in the treatment process. We can discuss the costs as well as payment and financing options during a consultation with Dr. Widenhouse.

Benefits of Fat Transfer and Injections

Fat transfer and injection uses a patient’s own fat as a dermal filler to add volume to areas of the face. This treatment also benefits patients by:

  • Reshaping or contouring an area of the body where fat is harvested
  • Not causing any allergic reaction since the fat injected is from the patient’s own body
  • Performing the procedure in the doctor’s office
  • Being a safe procedure
  • Enjoying long-lasting results

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Fat Transfer and Injection?

Fat transfer and injection is safe and effective for anyone wishing to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and hollowed cheeks. It is especially effective for those who are apprehensive about using artificial substances for dermal filler treatments. Anyone who wants to consider liposuction may want to think about using the fat as a dermal filler if they are concerned about visible signs of aging.

What Do I Do to Prepare for Fat Transfer and Injection?

Much of the preparation for fat transfer and injection involves a consultation to see if there is an area on your body to harvest enough fat to perform this type of dermal filler treatment. Additionally, it is important to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo these procedures. We recommend you stop taking any medications or supplements such as ibuprofen and other NSAIDS, aspirin, Vitamin D, Gingko Biloba and other supplements at least a week before the procedure. These are considered blood thinning medications and may interfere with the procedure and negatively affect the healing process.

What Should I Expect the Day of Fat Transfer and Injection?

With fat transfer and injection, the first step is harvesting the fat. This is done by puncturing the area (hips, thighs, stomach) with a specific needle that leaves tiny pinhole perforations. From there, Dr. Widenhouse uses a small cannula inserted into the punctures to remove the fat to be prepared for injection.

At that point, it is injected into the areas of the face or body and molded to look natural and refreshed. To make you comfortable throughout the process, we use local IV sedation with oral sedation.

What to Expect After Fat Transfer and Injection

Because fat transfer and injection involves a lighter form of liposuction, there is some downtime and recovery mainly to recover from the fat harvesting. It is important to rest for a few days following the procedure and avoid strenuous exercise. If it is necessary to return to work the following day, be sure to keep activity to a minimum to allow the body to recover and heal. Any slight swelling or bruising diminishes within a couple of weeks.

When Can I Expect to See Results from Fat Transfer and Injection?

The results from fat transfer and injection are two-fold. The injection part of the process offers some immediate results that improve over time as any swelling and redness subsides. As for the fat harvesting, it takes several weeks for the results from this part of the treatment to become noticeable since the area is often slightly swollen and bruised from the procedure.
