Rhinoplasty in Charleston, SC
If you are unsatisfied with the shape of your nose due to trauma or what you were born with, rhinoplasty provides the opportunity to craft new contours, giving your face and nose the shapeliness you’ve always desired. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse offers rhinoplasty for men and women who live in Charleston, Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and the surrounding communities in South Carolina.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a “nose job”) is a surgical procedure to improve the size and shape of your nose. If you desire a nose that looks better and complements your facial features, rhinoplasty may be for you. Rhinoplasty can help people who dislike the shape of their nose due to either natural development or injury.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Dr. Widenhouse offers several different types of rhinoplasty surgery to meet each patient’s unique goals and desired aesthetic.
Augmentation
Augmentation rhinoplasty is used to widen the nasal bridge to balance the proportions of the nose with the surrounding facial structures. Patients with a narrow nose and wide face or pronounced cheekbones can achieve better facial balance from this type of nose surgery.
Reduction
Reduction rhinoplasty is used to reduce the size of the nose. Cartilage and bone can be removed from the nasal bridge and nasal tip to create a narrower nose. A dorsal hump or bump on the top of the nose can also be removed with this type of cosmetic rhinoplasty.
Post-traumatic
Functional rhinoplasty techniques can be used to repair a broken nose after an injury and restore proper function. Nasal injuries may result in the unpleasant appearance of a crooked nose or deviated septum, which can cause breathing problems. This type of nasal surgery can be performed immediately after an injury or years later.
Reconstructive
Reconstructive rhinoplasty may include rebuilding of the nose after serious injury or cancer or revision rhinoplasty to repair the results of a previous procedure. Cartilage grafts may be taken from the ribs to repair the interior structures, preventing a collapse. This type of rhinoplasty often has aesthetic and health benefits since poor rhinoplasty results or lack of nasal structure can impact the nose’s structure.
Liquid Rhinoplasty
Liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical option that uses dermal fillers to subtly alter the shape of the nose. A nasal hump, drooping nasal tip, or and narrow nose can be improved with this technique. However, dramatic changes to the nose’s structure and appearance are often best achieved with surgery so it is good to have realistic expectations. While surgical rhinoplasty results are permanent, the liquid rhinoplasty lasts about 1-2 years.

Read Our ReviewsWho Is The Ideal Candidate For Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is generally sought by people who have long been uncomfortable with the shape or size of their noses. It is important, to begin with a good understanding of what the procedure can accomplish and realistic expectations for your rhinoplasty procedure.
What Do I Need To Do Before Rhinoplasty?
Scheduling a consultation with leading rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Widenhouse is the first step in your journey toward rhinoplasty. He will evaluate the nose structure and review your medical history to determine if rhinoplasty can address the issues you face and help you complete your aesthetic goals. You’ll be given instructions to guide you in preparing for rhinoplasty, which include smoking cessation, medication and supplement instructions, and when to cease eating or drinking before the scheduled procedure if IV sedation dictates.
What Should I Expect On The Day Of My Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is performed with IV sedation, which allows for a quicker recovery than general anesthesia. Dr. Widenhouse performs open rhinoplasty procedures in nearly every case. This procedure begins with an incision in the columella, the tissue that separates your nostrils. Doing this allows Dr. Widenhouse to better view and manipulate the nasal bones and cartilage.
Depending on your aesthetic goals, nasal structures can be reduced, reshaped, or augmented. This may require the use of donor cartilage, which may be taken from the nose or elsewhere in the body.
How Long Does It Take To Perform Rhinoplasty?
Most rhinoplasty procedures require one to two hours to complete. Some circumstances will require a longer timeframe, including if additional procedures will be completed in the same session. At your consultation, your personalized surgical plan will be discussed in detail to give you a better idea of what the procedure will entail.

LEARN MORERhinoplasty Recovery
At Port City Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. After your rhinoplasty, you will need someone to drive you home, and it is recommended that you have someone stay with you the night of your procedure. You will have a brace, nose packing, or tubes in your nostrils to help your nose heal in the desired shape. Prescription pain medication and cold compresses can be used to keep comfortable during the recovery process. You should be able to return to work in less than two weeks after your surgery but strenuous activities should be avoided for at least four weeks.
Results of Rhinoplasty
Swelling of the nose will diminish gradually over several months. It may take up to a year before you see the final results of your rhinoplasty but these results are permanent. Patients can expect natural-looking results that complement their facial features and enhance the overall aesthetic of their face.
Will I Have Scars After Getting Rhinoplasty?
If a closed rhinoplasty technique is used, all surgical scars are concealed within the nose. Open rhinoplasty does produce a scar outside the nose along the columella, but the incision is quite small and typically heals excellently, producing such a minimal scar that most will not notice it.
Combination Procedures
Rhinoplasty can be included with other facial procedures like a facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Facelift surgery is used to improve signs of aging like sagging skin, wrinkles, jowling, and hollowness in the cheeks or under the eyes. Including a rhinoplasty with a facelift can give patients the nose they have always desired. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids to address droopy eyelids, hollow under-eyes, and puffiness under the eyes. By lifting the upper eyelids and removing excess fat from below the eyes, patients can achieve a brighter, more refreshed look. Combining rhinoplasty with this procedure will further enhance the mid-upper face.
