Breast Augmentation in Charleston, SC

Breast augmentation enhances the breasts, adding volume with silicone or saline breast implants. The results are fuller, firmer, and proportional breasts. If you feel your breasts are small or have lost shape or volume with time, after having children, or as part of the aging process, breast augmentation can help you regain a more youthful shape. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian G. Widenhouse offers breast augmentation for patients who live in Charleston, Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and the surrounding communities in South Carolina.

About Our Implants

What to Expect During Your Consultation

There are many factors to take into consideration with breast augmentation. During your consultation with Dr. Widenhouse, you will discuss what is involved with this type of procedure, and together, you will make decisions regarding:

  • Selecting a silicone or saline implant
  • Selecting the size of your breast implant
  • Selecting the incision site
  • Selecting the placement of the breast implant

At Port City Plastic Surgery, Dr. Widenhouse evaluates each patient’s body type and frame size to help inform the best possible outcome. The type and style of implant depends on your current breast and chest wall dimensions, your age, whether or not you have had breast augmentation surgery before, and your personal preferences for natural-looking or more high-profile breasts.

After a thorough examination and review of your medical history, Dr. Widenhouse will be able to determine what surgical procedure and implant is best for you.

Results and Recovery

Women who receive breast augmentation tend to be very happy with the results. According to a recent survey conducted by the ASPS, about 99 percent of women receiving breast surgeries like breast augmentation said they would have the procedure again.

After breast augmentation, you’ll experience some swelling, which makes it difficult to immediately visualize the results. Also, breast implants are positioned higher on the chest during the procedure, allowing them to settle naturally. You’ll be able to see the results of your breast augmentation approximately six months after surgery.

Breast implants have a lifespan of 20-25 years. At this time, patients may choose to have them removed, replaced with new implants, or replaced with new implants of another size or makeup. The longevity of results varies and can be affected by many factors, such as weight loss or gain and pregnancy.

Are breast implants under warranty?

Breast Implants are usually under warranty. The warranty varies depending on the implant manufacturer. Most manufacturer warranties cover the cost of the implants themselves. Under certain circumstances, some associated surgical costs to replace the implants are also covered.

Can breast implants cause pain years later?

Some patients develop a capsular contracture following a breast augmentation, which can be painful. A contracture can occur several months, or even years, after surgery. If you are experiencing pain years after surgery, its best to be evaluated by a plastic surgeon.

Can breast implants last 30 years?

Breast implants can certainly last 30 years. However, the breast implants on the market today are a better quality than breasts implants made 30 years ago. Many patients chose replace their implants due to changes in their breasts as they age or because they want the newer type of implant. However, breast implants can last a lifetime.

Can fat be transferred to breasts?

Fat transfer to the breasts is an option for breast augmentation. However, your body has a tendency to reabsorb fat, so generally a breast augmentation with implants is a better option with more certain, longer-lasting results.

Can I move my arms after breast augmentation?

While you can move your arms following a breast augmentation, we ask that you refrain from overhead reaching for several weeks after your procedure. Should should also avoid lifting more than 5 pounds for the first few weeks post-operatively.

Can you breast feed after breast augmentation

Yes, you can breast feed after having a breast augmentation. The placement of breast implants, saline or silicone, has no effect on the ability to breast feed. However, the appearance of your implants and perkiness of your breasts may change with pregnancy and after breast feeding.

Do you have to replace breast implants every 10 years?

There is no requirement to replace breast implants every ten years. As long as you are not experiencing any issues related to your breast implants, they do not have to be replaced.

Does getting breast implants make you gain weight?

Getting breast implants will not make you gain weight. The weight of the implants themselves is not enough to move the scale very much. Diet and exercise following is still the key to weight gain and weight loss.

Does insurance cover breast implants?

Insurance does not cover the cost of a cosmetic breast augmentation procedure. Insurance companies will cover the cost of a breast augmentation if it is related to breast reconstruction due to breast cancer.

How do I know if my breast implant is leaking?

If you have saline implants, you will notice a decrease in breast size if an implant is leaking. If you have silicone implants, you may notice a decrease in breast size if an implant is leaking. With both types of implants, a mammogram often can detect an implant leak.

How do you know if you have capsular contracture?

Some symptoms of a capsular contracture include tightness, or firmness in the breast. Some other symptoms include breasts that appear high on the chest or distorted and pain/discomfort, especially when lying on the breasts. It is also common for a capsular contracture to be in one breast and not the other.
