How Do I Know if I Need a Breast Lift or a Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation in Charleston, SCAre you unsatisfied with the size of your breasts? Do they seem too small, or do they sag and droop? Depending on your issue, there is a surgical procedure available to help you achieve the breasts you’ve been dreaming of. You may need a breast lift, a breast augmentation – or both. To find out what procedure or combination of procedures is right for you, speak to a board certified plastic surgeon.

Why Would I Get a Breast Augmentation?

If you want bigger, fuller breasts, a breast augmentation is the solution. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. You may have naturally small breasts, or you may have experienced a decrease in breast tissue due to weight loss or fluctuating hormones. Whatever the reason, there is little you can do to naturally increase the size of your breasts. Breast augmentation enhances the breasts, adding volume via silicone or saline breast implants for fuller, firmer and proportional breasts.

Why Would I Get a Breast Lift?

Gravity can have an undesirable effect on your breasts. Skin and ligaments lose some of their elasticity with age. Life events like childbirth, aging, or weight gain and loss can stretch the skin and ligaments. These things can cause your breasts to sag or lose shape. If the sagging of your breasts makes you feel self-conscious or unattractive, a breast lift may be a good option for you. A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical technique for reshaping the breasts to reduce sagging and give your breasts a youthful shape and fullness. If you are happy with the volume of your breasts but unhappy with the position, a breast lift may work for you. Take a look at your breasts in a mirror. Do they droop and sag? Are they pointed downward? If so, you may decide to have a breast lift. Just remember, a breast lift alone will not change your breast size and it will not round out the upper part of the breast.

Which Procedure Is Right for You?

To determine which procedure is right for you, think about your desired outcome. Remember that breast augmentation primarily focuses on breast size and shape. It will not correct drooping breasts. A breast lift primarily focuses on breast position. It will not increase the size of your breasts. Often, both procedures are done together to achieve fullness in the upper breasts while repositioning sagging breasts and nipples.

Do you need a breast augmentation, a breast lift or both? Only a board certified plastic surgeon can tell you which option is right for you. Take the time to discuss your concerns and your goals with your plastic surgeon to get the best possible outcome.
