About Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual event was created in 1985 to help raise awareness, increase the understanding of breast cancer, and improve breast cancer research. The event that started with only two members has now grown to include hundreds of sponsors, several government agencies and many professional associations. Here’s what to know about detecting and treating breast cancer, and why board-certified plastic surgeons are key to helping women regain their confidence.
Early Detection Is Key
When it comes to metastatic breast cancer, early diagnosis and detection is the key to survival. That’s why yearly mammograms are encouraged for women who are 40 years of age and older, and for those women who have an increased risk of developing the disease because of family history.
It may not be possible to prevent breast cancer entirely, but with early detection, survival rates go up drastically. In fact, the National Breast Cancer Foundation says that the disease has a survival rate of 98 percent when the cancer is detected early. In addition to having an annual mammogram, you are encouraged to do monthly breast self-examinations to keep an eye on your breast health.
Treatment for Breast Cancer
Treatment options for breast cancer include a mastectomy, lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. After a woman’s breast has been removed, breast reconstruction is often used to replace or create a new breast. Breast reconstruction can also be helpful in achieving symmetry following a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, as well as help with physical and psychological healing, improving overall health. Removal of a breast can make a woman feel less feminine, and the breast’s new appearance following a mastectomy or lumpectomy serves as a constant reminder of her health battles.
At Port City Plastic Surgery, we consider breast reconstruction to be one of the most rewarding procedures we offer. It can provide a much-needed emotional boost for many women, helping them regain confidence in their bodies and their appearance. Flap reconstruction and implant reconstruction are two state-of-the-art options, but it can be difficult to know which is the best option, especially when focusing all your energy on surviving a breast cancer diagnosis. A board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction surgery is key.
Breast reconstruction is not right for every woman who has lost a breast or whose breasts have sustained damage. Ideal candidates will have sufficient tissue on the chest to facilitate reconstruction. Also, cancer patients considering breast reconstruction should have the procedure cleared with their oncologist, as cancer recurrence may be a concern. Our team will provide the much needed emotional support to help you on your breast reconstruction journey.
