As technology and medicine advance, our Summerville, NC area patients have more options than ever when it comes to treatment for unwanted fat deposits. If you are in the Mount Pleasant area, you are able to choose between Liposuction and CoolSculpting®. Since we want you to be able to make the most informed decision, we have put together this handy comparison guide.
While both procedures are meant to remove fat cells from targeted areas of the body, there are some key differences.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that results in the removal of fat from a targeted area. A solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the area to loosen up the fat as well as numb the area for surgery. Then, one or more small incisions are made and the fat is drawn out using suction.
CoolSculpting® is the FDA-approved, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that freezes away stubborn fat deposits. Targeting only fat cells, CoolSculpting® involves no incisions, no injections, and no anesthetics. The procedure involves clamping a section of fat and freezing it from outside the body. Once the cells have been treated, your body will naturally eliminate the frozen, dead cells.
Procedure Length and Recovery Time
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that usually takes one to two hours, depending on the size of the treated area. Most patients only require one session to see results. Recovery time is usually only a few days, with some limits on strenuous activity extending two to four weeks after the procedure. Due to swelling following the procedure, results may not be immediately apparent, but should become more obvious one to three months afterward.
Each CoolSculpting® session takes about an hour and it is recommended to undergo multiple sessions spread out over a few weeks for the best results. Since it is a non-invasive procedure, there is no recovery time necessary with CoolSculpting®. Initial results will be visible within a few weeks, and full results can be expected within three months.
