Saline vs. Silicone, What is the Difference?

If you are considering breast augmentation, then you have a lot to think about. One of the biggest questions, however, is what material to use for the breast implant itself. Although many patients know that they have the option between saline and silicone implants, it can be challenging to understand the difference. So, if you are deciding what material to use in your implant, here is what you need to know.

Breast Implants in Charleston, SC

Saline Implants

Saline implants are available to all women over the age of 18 who are undergoing breast augmentation. With this type of implant, a silicone shell is inserted into the body. The doctor then fills the shell with saline (sterile salt water), until it reaches the desired size. Some implants can even be adjusted after the operation with a remote injection port. Although generally successful, it is possible for the saline implant to ripple under the skin. If the saline implant should rupture, signs of the rupture are generally quite visible.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are available to women over the age of 22 who are undergoing breast augmentation. Made of an inert polymer, this substance has no known human allergies and can be thought of as similar in consistency to a gummy candy. Many feel that silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants, offering a softer and more authentic result. However, about 10% of women with silicone implants experience implant rupture in the first 10 years after surgery.

If either implant should leak, surgery is necessary to fix the problem. However, in most cases, problems with silicone implants are somewhat easier to address than those with silicone implants.
