A Comprehensive Guide to Top Surgery
For transgender individuals, top surgery can completely transform not just their bodies but their lives as well. By enhancing the chest for a more feminine appearance or taking about excess breast tissue for a toned, masculine look, Dr. Widenhouse and our team at Port City Plastic Surgery can help you embrace your true you with gender affirming surgery.
What is Top Surgery?
Top surgery is a gender-affirming surgery performed on trans women (Male-to-Female or MTF), trans men (Female-to-Male or FTM), and non-binary individuals. MTF top surgery involves the enhancement of the breasts through the insertion of implants, while FTM top surgery involves removing breast tissue and excess skin, sculpting existing tissue for a more masculine chest. For transgender men and women, as well as non-binary people, top surgery is a way to alleviate gender dysphoria and experience greater confidence in themselves.
MTF Top Surgery
For trans women, top surgery involves creating a more feminine chest area by inserting saline or silicone implants. The size and type of implants used largely depend on your body type and your personal goals.
FTM Top Surgery
FTM top surgery, or masculinizing chest surgery, involves the removal of breast tissue and, in some instances, resizing and repositioning the nipples. The ultimate goal is to achieve a more masculine chest contour.
Why Choose Port City Plastic Surgery for Your Top Surgery?
When it comes to top surgery, comfort and safety are paramount, and you could not be in better hands than with Dr. Brian Widenhouse. What to Expect During a Top Surgery Consultation?
During your consultation, Dr. Widenhouse and our care team will discuss your goals, perform a physical exam of the treatment area, explain the procedure and any potential complications in detail, and answer any questions you might have.
Each option is a major surgery. No matter which procedure you have done, we’ll start by administering IV sedation by a board-certified anesthesiologist. During double incision top surgery, Dr. Widenhouse will then make the incisions you discussed during your consultation and either remove excess breast tissue or insert your breast implants. MTF surgery takes about 2-3 hours, and FTM surgery lasts anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.
